Honey Wine
The Ancient Tradition
Tej is a traditional Ethiopian honey wine that has been enjoyed for thousands of years.
Historically, it was often associated with royalty and the noble class. It was served in royal courts and during important celebrations, which gave it a sense of status and importance.
Over time, tej became something people across communities enjoyed, especially during weddings, gatherings, funerals and holidays. Tej houses, known as tej bets, became places where people came together to drink, talk, and connect.
Birz is the early, non-alcoholic version of tej. It’s made from the same ingredients but is enjoyed before it fully ferments.
Because of that, birz is lighter, sweeter, and refreshing.
